  • Bali, 22 – 29 October – For its 16th year as Southeast Asia’s leading literary event, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (23 – 27 October) has announced its full lineup of over 180 authors, journalists, artists and activists from 30 countries, including Laksmi Pamuntjak, Tara June Winch, Lala Bohang, Yotam Ottolenghi, Andreas Harsono, and Behrouz Boochani.   • Canberra, 21 June – 27 October – The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) ‘Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia’ is a major exhibition of contemporary Indonesian art showcasing 20 of the most exciting emerging and established artists from Bali and Java’s key artistic centres of Bandung, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.   • Canberra, 24 August – Join AIYA ACT for an Indonesian Cooking Night! Come learn how to make Sulawesi cuisine – specifically Makr Pepes and Martabak Bandung (vegetarian options available). No cooking experience required. More information and to register, click here.
  • Canberra, 27 August – Missing out on AIYA ACT’s Indonesian Cooking event? The ANU Cooking Club is also hosting an Indonesian cooking event – making satay and coconut rice next Tuesday. Check the link for more information.
  • Canberra, 6 – 7 September – Don’t miss out on ANU’s Annual ‘Indonesia Update’ titled ‘From stagnation to regression? Indonesian democracy after twenty years’. It is free to attend (additional costs for meals). The final program is available and the registration is now open.
  • Darwin, 31 August – Darwin is hosting Warisan Budaya Festival! Journey to Goyder Square for several Indonesian cultural performances, traditional music and dance performances by overseas and local acts to keep the crowd delightfully entertained throughout the night. Follow the FB event here.
  • Makassar, 24 – 25 August – Want to know more about AIYA East Indo? Come along to their ‘Pesta Komunitas Makassar 2019’ at Fort Rotterdam. For more information, follow their Instagram.
  • Melbourne, 23 (TONIGHT) & 25 August – AIYA Victoria invite you to attend the AFL (Australian Football League), with AIYA’s Vice President have complimentary tickets to a series of upcoming games at the MCG.   • Melbourne, 28 August – Come to AIYA Vic’s LX every Wednesday at 6pm, RMIT Building 80.
  • Melbourne, 4 September – Join AIYA Victoria’s special screening of feature documentary  ‘Aceh: Beyond the Tsunami’ at the Indonesian Consulate. Following the film, there will be a Q&A with Ben Mortley, one of the film’s producers, as well as dinner! It’s $5 for AIYA members and $10 for non-members, with half of all proceeds going to UNICEF (cash only). Be sure to sign up via the FB event.

  • Sydney, 2 September – Join SSEAC for the launch of Andreas Harsono’s latest book, Race, Islam and Power: Ethnic and Religious Violence in Post-Suharto Indonesia at the University of Sydney from 12:30pm. Register your attendance! 
  • Sydney, 9 September – The Lowy Institute’s Southeast Asia Project are co-hosting a half-day version of ANU’s Indonesia Update conference in Sydney from 9.15am. NAILA 2019: Categories & Prizes

  • Applications for the National Australia Indonesia Language Awards (NAILA) are now open! The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Environment’. Follow the website & FB page for more updates, including an information pack. Applications close 17 September – so ayo, get filming!
  • The all-important process for ratification of IA-CEPA by the Australian Parliament is underway, with Australia’s Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) currently calling for public submissions prior to making its recommendations. This is a critical step towards IA-CEPA entering into force, and one which AIBC is fully supporting, through its own submission and broad advocacy. Submissions close today, with details and lodgement instructions found here.
  • Application for the ACICIS Public Health Study Tour running in Nov-Dec 2019 close 25 August! Spend two weeks in Indonesia. $3,000 New Colombo Plan grants are available for eligible students.
  • Are you a scholar of Southeast Asia? Would you like to better integrate human rights into your research and teaching practices? Join the University of Sydney’s Tim Soutphommasane for a one-day workshop (2 Sept) on mainstreaming human rights into your teaching and research on SE Asia. Travel grants available for eligible candidates. Places capped at 40 – apply now! Applications close 26 August 2019.
  • Applications for the Language Assistant Program in Western Australian Public Schools 2020 are now open! If you are an Indonesian (under the age of 29, living in Indonesia and recently graduated in the field of education (with little teaching experience) and you are passionate about promoting Indonesian language and cultures, then this opportunity is for you! For more information and to apply, head to the online application form. Applications close 30 August 2019.
  • Applications for ACICIS Semester Programs running in Semester 1, 2020 close 1 September! Study, intern and immerse yourself in Indonesia! Programs are available in Agriculture, Law, Business, Development Studies, International Relations, Indonesian Language Teaching, and Indonesian Language. $7,000-$8,000 New Colombo Plan grants are available for eligible students.
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is seeking a Senior Media Officer (full time, ongoing) based in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Senior Media Officer is a leadership position within the media team, responsible for providing strategic advice on how to engage journalists in Indonesia and carrying out key public affairs duties.   • Got no summer plans yet? Applications are now open for Learning Languages Locally: Indonesia! This is an incredible short exchange program (open to all ANU undergraduate students with elective space) that allows you to study in-country and learn Bahasa Indonesia. This ANU course is also New Colombo Plan funded with grants up to $3,000 available for those eligible. Learn more here – applications close 8 September 2019.
  • The Herb Feith Scholarships scheme is a new initiative of the Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre. Scholarships support graduate researchers to complete an MA or PhD at Monash University on a topic related to Indonesia. Submit your expression of interest for the January – June 2020 enrolment period by 11 October (Domestic Students), the deadline for international students has closed. Find out more here!
  • Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre will have their 2019 Conference entitled, ‘Chinese Indonesians: Identities and Histories’ on 1 – 3 October. See the flyer and register here. Discounted registration available for students and AIYA members.
  • Applications for Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarships for Semester 2, 2020 have opened. Apply today!
  • The Australia Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) is seeking host families in Canberra for the period 14 October to 1 November 2019. AIYEP Host families will be provided with supermarket and/or fuel vouchers to the value of A$600 for the period as a token of thanks for sharing their home.  If you are able to host an Indonesian youth, click here for more details and to contact DFAT.
  • IndoAustay are running the next Adult Language Immersion Course in Bandung, 6 – 17 January, 2020. The two-week course is taught at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Bandung and is a great way to learn more about Indonesian language and culture.   • The AIMEP is a prestigious international program which invites emerging Muslim leaders in Australia and Indonesia to engage in an intensive two-week visit of cultural, social, interreligious, and intellectual exchange with their neighbouring country. While you wait for applications to open have a look at the key selection criteria and information you’ll need. Follow the website for updates!
  • The Asia Centre’s 5th International Conference (to be held in Bangkok, July 2020) will focus on ‘Hate Speech in Asia: Challenges and Solutions. They are now accepting abstracts until 15 December 2019. Submit yours and/or register for the conference here.
  • Pemberdayaan Perempuan Memerangi Kemiskinan (PPMK) is a microfinance organisation based in Yogyakarta that work to empower women to fight poverty. They also provide free English classes to children and are currently working to establish an English book library, so the children can continue learning at home. They are seeking donations of new and secondhand English books for preschool to high school aged children.
