  • Bali, 22 – 29 October – Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has revealed its first round of storytellers for its 16th year. From 23-27 October in Bali, Laksmi Pamuntjak, Tara June Winch, Lala Bohang, Yotam Ottolenghi, Andreas Harsono, and Behrouz Boochani will be joined by 170+ writers from 30+ countries.   • Canberra, 21 June – 27 October – The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) ‘Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia’ is a major exhibition of contemporary Indonesian art will showcase 20 of the most exciting emerging and established artists from Bali and Java’s key artistic centres of Bandung, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.   • Canberra, 9 August – Come meet new friends and practise your Indonesian or English at AIYA ACT’s weekly Language Exchange every Friday at 5:30 at ANU Union. No matter your language level come along and have a chat! RSVP on Facebook to keep up to date with this event and future LX.
  • Canberra, 18 August (updated date) – AIYA ACT is doing a bushwalk up Black Mountain, to be followed by a BBQ at Black Mountain Peninsula Park – join them at 10am. RSVP on the FB event to ensure there is plenty of BBQ snacks!
  • Canberra, 24 August – The annual AIA ACT Winter Dinner will again celebrate Hari Kemerdekaan and be held the following Saturday at the Canberra Deakin Football Club. Evening includes a three-course meal, and great entertainment with a Gamelan Group, a band and lots more. This year’s guest speaker is HE Bapak Kristiarto Legowo – Ambassador to Australia.   • Darwin, 31 August – Darwin is hosting Warisan Budaya Festival! Journey to Goyder Square, Palmerston for several Indonesian cultural performances, traditional Indonesian music and dance performances by overseas and local acts to keep the crowd delightfully entertained throughout the night.   • Jakarta, 10, 12 – 13 August – Register now for the 5th Congress of Indonesian Diaspora 2019 – the largest gathering of Indonesian diaspora, to be held in Jakarta. This year’s theme is ‘Empowering Indonesia’s Human Capital’. Read the official conference invitation.
  • Melbourne, 9 August – Attend the University of Melbourne Indonesia Forum Monthly Discussion, ‘Indonesia after 2019 Election: Reflections on Social Movements’ from 5:30pm. See the flyer.

  • Melbourne, 14 August – Come to AIYA Vic’s LX every Wednesday at 6pm, RMIT Building 80.
  • Melbourne, 17 August – Immerse yourself in a one-day INDONESIA RAYA 2019 FESTIVAL at the Queensbridge Square to celebrate Indonesia’s 74th Independence Day. The event will showcase the best of Indonesian culture, Indonesian tourism destinations, and Indonesian cuisines. Food starts at 12:00, entertainment starts from 3pm till late.   • Perth, 14 August – The Australia-Indonesia Business Council (AIBC) WA invite you to participate in the first of a four-part workshop series exploring how to best prepare for the soon-to-be ratified IA-CEPA. This workshop will focus on the IA-CEPA outcomes around Food & Beverage. Register before 9 August 2019.

  • Perth, 22 August – Perth’s Centre for Stories X PEN Perth are putting a ‘Spotlight on Indonesia’ this month with AIYA WA’s own Martha Weruing and Kevin Ng, along with other Indonesian Perth residents speaking on the Indonesian experience and literature.   • Sydney, 15 August – Nusantawa is an annual non-profit event by PPIA USYD, which has run since 2013. Typically showcasing stand-up comedy, this year they’ve expanded the scope to include musical and theatrical performances, making it the biggest it has ever been! Get tickets here.
  • Sydney, 16 August – Now in its seventh iteration, this year’s ASEAN Forum focuses on the digital revolution in ASEAN. It will bring together leading academic thinkers, activists, practitioners and policy makers to discuss and debate the impact of the digital revolution and the challenges the ASEAN must face.   • The Herb Feith Scholarships scheme is a new initiative of the Monash Herb Feith Indonesian Engagement Centre.   • The Australia Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) is seeking host families in Canberra for the period 14 October to 1 November 2019.   • IndoAustay are running the next Adult Language Immersion Course in Bandung, 6 – 17 January, 2020. The two-week course is taught at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Bandung and is a great way to learn more about Indonesian language and culture.
