In association with Legacy Pictures, Screenplay Films and All in Pixel, AIYA is bringing 2017’s biggest Indonesian film to cinemas across Australia in May!
Directed by Hanung Bramantyo and starring Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?‘s Dian Sastrowardoyo, ‘Kartini’ tells the incredible true story of Indonesia’s most famous heroine.
In the early 1900s, before Indonesia gained its Independence, Java is a land where noble family rules under Dutch Supervision. Only noble and royal families are able to get an education. Women aren’t allowed to get higher education, even for royal blood. Women in Javanese culture are only have one purpose – to be a bride for a man with royal blood. Kartini grew up to fight this caste system and to fight for equality for women, and most importantly she fought for the right for everyone to get an education regardless their social status nor gender. This is an emotional journey of Kartini where she has to defy her own family, her own culture and fight for a change in rules and tradition that are considered sacred in Java.
The movie will be presented in Indonesian with English subtitles.
