In the news
- ACICIS Founding Director Steps Down: Consortium Director Professor David Hill is retiring after 24 years of founding the Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies. The legendary Professor Hill has made an absolutely incredible contribution to the lives of so many young Australians and Indonesians and he has been a huge support to AIYA since our organisation’s inception. Selamat, Pak!
- Indonesia’s first new city, like many others, may not be addressing the urban problems it was supposed to.
- Last week, Australia hosted six Southeast Asian countries for the inaugural iteration of a subregional defense ministers’ meeting on counterterrorism in Perth. The meeting represents the evolving subregional cooperation around security issues in the region in general as well as deepening collaboration between Australia and ASEAN countries on counterterrorism in particular.
- Thousands of residents in Indonesia’s capital have been evacuated due to flooding, while landslides in satellite cities around Jakarta have left at least two dead and eight missing.
- Australia can develop Indonesia’s next generation of talent in logistics, tourism, and digital economy as President Jokowi looks to focus on human capital development by adding 58 million skilled workers by 2030.
- Much of Indonesia’s raunchy dangdut music is unashamedly erotic, despite various attempts by hardline Muslim groups to censor it. The law against performances of people “dancing or moving in an erotic fashion” is not universally observed.

- Brisbane, 12 February – If you want to become more involved or just want the chance to have your say on our direction in the year to come, then come along to this year’s AIYA QLD’s AGM.
- Melbourne, 14 February – Join AIYA VIC’s weekly Language Exchange sessions each Wednesday night from 6PM at RMIT (CBD).
- Sydney, 10 March – The annual Australia Indonesia Awards are back! Book your ticket today and come along to the AIA’s night of nights to celebrate those who have made an incredible contribution to the Australia-Indonesia relationship.

- Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture’s Darmasiswa Scholarships applications are now open! Check out the program eligibility, selection timeline, and required documents here. The online registration closes 18 February.
- Applications for ACICIS’ Flexible Language Immersion Program (FLIP) and Development Studies Immersion Program (DSIP) are now open! This is a great opportunity to study at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. $5,000 New Colombo Plan grants are available for eligible students.
- The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) is looking for a Deputy Resident Director for ACICIS’ Indonesia programs. Check out the position description and how to apply here and apply before 2 March.
- Are you a food blogger? Do you enjoy working in large international scale events? Ubud Food Festival 2018 is looking for volunteers this April! Registrations will close 9 March.
- Check out experiential learning trip in Bali and Lombok this April organised by CERES Global. The trip will focus on building friendships with organisations and groups involved in marine protection with a particular emphasis on plastic waste in our oceans.
- Check out the applications for Hamer Scholarships this year! The scholarships offer the opportunity for language study and cultural engagement with dynamic markets such as Indonesia.
- Australia Awards in Indonesia is pleased to announce that applications for Australia Awards Scholarships is now open until 30 April. The scholarships provide opportunities for individuals to gain an internationally recognised master or doctoral qualification from an Australian university and have the chance to pursue a career that makes a difference.
