Welcome back to Member Spotlight where we introduce you to the personalities behind AIYA. This week, we introduce you to Communications Officer, Jakarta Chapter, Allison Hore!
What is your occupation/What do you study?
What made you so interested in Australia/Indonesia?
I first visited Indonesia a few years ago as a student in the ACICIS Journalism Professional Practicum program. After returning to Australia to finish my masters degree, I couldn’t get Jakarta out of my head. I really wanted to return, so I looked for an opportunity to do so.
What is your favourite place to visit in Indonesia/Australia?
I am not sure I have a favourite place to visit. My favourite way to travel is just to go to a new city and soak in as much as I can. I love walking around Jakarta and finding new and interesting places I have never been.
Favourite meal in Indonesia/Australia?
My favourite meal in Indonesia is Bubur Ayam. There is no better way to start the day than with delicious, filling rice porridge. In Australia I love eating fish and chips by the beach.
How about your favourite word in Indonesian/English?
It’s not really a word, but a phrase. Like most Australian people I love to say “no worries”, it reflects my relaxed attitude to life. Likewise in Indonesian I love to say “tidak apa apa”.
Do you have a favourite Indonesian/Australian film?
Not off the top of my head! Actually, some of my favourite movies are from New Zealand
Any hopes for the bilateral relationship?
I hope that in the future there will be more mutual understanding between Australia and Indonesia. Australian people still have many misconceptions about Indonesia, and I hope that with more exposure and education Australian people will learn more about the country. Bali is beautiful, but there is more to Indonesia than beaches!
What was getting involved with AIYA like?
When I moved to Jakarta from Sydney I didn’t know too many people so AIYA has been a great way for me to make new friends and connect with like minded people.
What do you like most about AIYA?
What I like most about AIYA is how enthusiastic all the members are! Being part of the committee I can see how hard my fellow committee members work. It is great to see so many people working together for a shared goal!
Sum up your experience as an AIYA member in three words!
Bringing people together.
