In the news     

  • Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, will visit Australia in February. The visit is scheduled during a joint sitting week in Canberra to accommodate a parliamentary address. It is also a final push to get the Free Trade Agreement over the line before the visit. (Australian Financial Review)
  • The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is an anomaly in Indonesia’s corrupt institutional environment. However, critics and state power holders had argued for KPK to be reinvented to function as a government-friendly watchdog. Will this weaken KPK’s power, and what are the ramifications.   • As the fear of the spread of Coronavirus takes hold around the world, many fear of the intersection of its ramifications. This ABC News article covers the story of the six Chinese men who tried to enter Australia by boat from East-Timor, intercepted, and brought back to Kupang.   • Bali has become synonymous with Australian tourists, but the Indonesian government plans to build ‘10 new Balis’ to attract more international tourists.   • While coronavirus infections grow globally, Indonesia has claimed zero cases so far. However, suspected cases continued to be recorded across the archipelago. For updated information check here. (The Jakarta Post)
  • Indonesia was shocked by the news that Indonesian national Reynhard Sinaga was charged with hundreds of counts of rape. But according to the Indonesian Human Rights Commission, revulsion of the case have sparked a widespread homophobic backlash, some of which have resulted in policies that can severely impact the LGBT community, as Aljazeera covered.   • Melbourne, 20 February – 28 March – Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts (Asia-TOPA) returns to celebrate the creative imagination of artists and cultures in the Asia-Pacific region. The events have shows showcasing the cultures of various Asian countries. Alumni of the University of Melbourne are eligible to receive a 15% discount. Check out out here.
  • Sydney, 31 January- Join AIYA national for its inaugural AIYA Alumni Dinner to celebrate AIYA alumni and thank them for their past and continuing contributions. Held in KJRI, a delicious Indonesia banquet will be included. Tickets are sold here.
  • Sydney, 1 February – Mosman Art Gallery, in conjunction with Indonesian Embassy and the Indonesian Consulate, are hosting a special exhibition/panel discussion entitled, ‘Jumaadi: My Love is an Island Far Away’ from 11:30am. Free event but bookings essential – see the FB event.
  • Sydney, 13 February –  The Indonesian Literature Club in Sydney is holding their next group discussion at Customs House Library. For registration and information email [email protected]
  • Sydney, 20 March- Join AIYA NSW for its annual Malam Karier in UTS CB04.03.310 from 6-9 pm. This year’s topic will be “Human Skills We Need in an Unpredictable World,” to gear future work-seekers towards a complex future.

  • Applications are open for a two-year appointment as postdoc in Human Rights in East and Southeast Asia at Lund University. The candidate needs to have a written Ph.D thesis with a focus on some aspects of human rights in East and Southeast Asia. More Info.
  • AIA ACT’s Indonesian language classes start 3 February, and run for 8 weeks. There are five levels (3 beginner levels, intermediate and advanced). Teachers are professional and native Indonesian speaking. Register here – early bird registration closes 29 January.
  • Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia is holding their annual essay competition for Indonesian students, Write to China. This year’s theme is ‘70 Years of Friendship: Celebrating Indonesia-China Bilateral Relations.’ To enter, you must be an Indonesian student between the ages of 18-24, your essay must be original, written in English, and 1000-1500 words in length.   • Want to advance your skills and knowledge in sustainable tourism management? Apply to join a Australia Awards short course in Australia this upcoming June. The two-week course is for tourism professionals from 15 provinces: South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi Gorontalo, Maluku, North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, West Papua, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan.
