Welcome back to Member Spotlight where we introduce you to the personalities behind AIYA. This week, we introduce you to Event Officer of AIYA Jakarta Chapter, Rebekah Smith!
What is your occupation/What do you study?
Bahasa Indonesia student at Universitas Indonesia, Depok
What is your favourite place to visit in Indonesia/Australia?
Any of the volcanoes in Java and seeing the sunrises from the top!
Favourite meal in Indonesia/Australia?
Anything from Padang: Sate Padang, Soto Padang and Nasi Padang
How about your favourite word in Indonesian/English?
‘Ora opo-opo’ / ‘Orapopo’ – don’t worry/it’s ok in Javanese!
Do you have a favourite Indonesian/Australian film?
Galih dan Ratna. Cliché but cute teenage romance
Any hopes for the bilateral relationship?
That we can cooperate better on common issues rather than let differences slow us down. I think youth are important to make that happen – we bring fresh energy and passion that help bridge gaps and strengthen connections
What was getting involved with AIYA like?
Very easy! I first got involved in Melbourne as the Socio-cultural Officer for 2019 which was great for having opportunities to organise events like movie nights, music/dance workshops and sports days. When I moved to Jakarta earlier this year it was as simple as Citra (Jakarta President) asking if/how I’d like to be involved. Now I am one of the Events Officers and excited for upcoming language exchanges, sports days and more!
What do you like most about AIYA?
What I like most about AIYA is that it serves so many purposes! With AIYA I have made incredible friends, professional networks, gained useful skills in event management and collaborating with partners as well as gaining access to events I otherwise wouldn’t have access to. I also definitely appreciated have a group I could fit right into when I moved to Jakarta!
Sum up your experience as an AIYA member in three words!
Inspiring, growth, fun!
Terima Kasih Rebekah, for sharing with us your passions and insights into your personal experience. Stay tuned for AIYA Blog Updates for the upcoming personas under Member Spotlight!
