In the news

  • Indonesia declared a state of emergency after a deadly oil spill off the coast of the island of Borneo continued to spread. This oil spill costs Indonesia’s poor, whose income relies on fishing.
  • Indonesia’s vast maritime space (second biggest in the world) is hotly contested between modern and traditional fishermen. Muhammad Zulfikar Rakhmat at the University of Manchester writes about the plight of traditional fishermen in Indonesia.
  • Indonesia busted fish pirates using an 30-km-long net. The ecosystem-endangering vessel may also have been involved in human trafficking.
  • Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara asserted the ministry will surely shut down social media platform Facebook in Indonesia following its users’ data breach scandal. The ministry has sent a written notice on April 5 and urged Facebook to submit a report on the number of Indonesian users’ whose data were breached.
  • Eighty-two people have died and 100 more in a critical condition in two Indonesian provinces after they were poisoned by a batch of bootleg alcohol. It is suspected to be the worst-ever mass fatality caused by alcohol poisoning in the country.
  • Indigenous elders on the Mid North Coast are sharing their knowledge about environmental sustainability with Indonesian marine and fisheries leaders from Maluku.
  • Former general Prabowo Subianto has accepted his party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Joko Widodo in next year’s presidential election, setting up a rerun of the 2014 race.
