Tropical cyclone Seroja battered Australia’s west coast Sunday night and into Monday, destroying homes and leaving thousands without electricity. The same cyclone wreaked havoc in remote islands of eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste early last week, where it brought strong winds and heavy rains that triggered flash floods and landslides.

  • Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne has announced the appointment of Penny Williams as the country’s new ambassador to Indonesia, making her the first woman to assume the position. The incoming envoy is a senior career and recently rose up the ranks to become deputy secretary of the department. Williams is fluent in Indonesian and had spent time in Indonesia as a high school exchange student. (Jakarta Post)
  • Australian politicians of both persuasions regularly state that Indonesia is one of Australia’s most important strategic partners. What this actually means in terms of Australia’s foreign-policy priorities and practices is, however, often contested.
